Carnival!

The carnival came to a neighboring town last month and we joined the other cub scouts for a fun night out. Oh, what fun (she said with sarcasm)!

Generally I like the age difference in my two kids. Most of the time it works for me.

This, however, is one of those times when having two kids seven years apart can be a problem. Scout, who is almost 10, didn’t want to ride on the kiddie rides with his 2-1/2 y.o. sister. He wanted to ride the big-kid rides with his cub scout buddies. I can’t blame him. Lil’bug wanted to go on everything! (Surprise! I was sure she’d hate the rides, Scout did at that age.) However, at just under 30 inches she’s not tall enough to go on anything. She was permitted on a few rides…with an escort. I went with her on the carousel (two, maybe three, times). She loved it! She rode the tiny teacups (think espresso-sized) with another little girl. One of Scout’s friends went on the boats with her (and gave me flashes of what the future holds). Scout was drafted to go on the bumble bees and hated every minute of it.

Scout wanted to go on all the big-kid rides with his cub scout friends. We compromised and while I was on the carousel with Lil’bug he went on a couple of rides with his friends. Then, he and his friends took her on the ‘wacky shack’. I thought she’d hate it, but she kept up and they were amazing with her, making sure she was able to keep her footing and not get knocked around. The only thing she didn’t like was the dragon coaster, the movement of it was too jerky.

At the end of the night no one was happy. Scout didn’t get to go on enough big-kid rides. Lil’bug wanted to stay and go on the carousel one more time. And the slide. Oh, the injustice of putting a giant slide in front of a 2-1/2 y.o. and then not letting said toddler on it. Even with an adult. It was something she could not understand. Me? I was ready for a nice Pinot, because why do I subject myself to that? I can’t win. Next time H is going with us if only to keep tabs on Scout while I follow Lil’bug.

This weekend the rides come to our community. I took Lil’bug up there last night (Scout was bushed after a long day week at cub scout camp and a baseball practice and he had to be on the field at 9:00 a.m. this morning for a game). She had a blast on the carousel, the train, and the cars (they’re on arms that go around in a circle). JOY! Scout will not be happy. The only big-kid rides are the ‘wacky shack’ and ‘drop zone’. The ‘pirate ship’ was not working last night (it wasn’t even assembled) and he’s never been on ‘drop zone’. Which doesn’t leave many choices.

We’ll skip it tonight. The whole thing is more teen-oriented (with a battle of the bands).

Tomorrow starts early with a 5K, then a parade, and a full day of festivities ending with fireworks.

Wish me luck!
