Date: Wednesday, December 24th, 2008
Time: 6:20 p.m.
Place: in the van, all four* of us, leaving the parking lot from church

*H goes to church twice a year…for Easter and Christmas, occasionally Mother’s Day, if I insist. So his presence is remarkable and unusual. As is the fact that it’s Wednesday and we were in church.

We were on our way to the store to pick up a bottle of Marsala wine for chicken marsala.

Scout: Why do we have to go to the store? Why can’t we just grab something quick and easy at McD’s?

Me: We are not having Christmas Eve dinner at McDonald’s!

Scout: What!? It’s Christmas Eve! You mean tomorrow is Christmas! waahooo!

He’d been counting down the days for over a week. How does it, the day most Christian 10-year-olds around the world look forward to for an entire year, all of a sudden, sneak up on him? He knew he was singing at the Christmas Eve Family Liturgy. Santa made an appearance in church a mere half hour before. There were evergreens, red and white pointsettias, wreaths, candles. How did he miss the signals?

  1. sorry we couldn’t be there. Really missing you all a lot this year.
